Biological nitrogen fixation in soybean under water restriction and exposed to 1-methylcyclopropene PAB
Nascimento Junior,Vitor Camargo do; Prete,Cássio Egidio Cavenaghi; Nogueira,Marco Antonio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to assess the effects of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on traits related with biological nitrogen fixation on 'BRS 268' soybean (Glycine max) subjected to water restriction. Plants were either exposed to drought between 32 (R2) and 47 (R3) days after sowing (DAS) or kept well-watered, in combination with exposure or not to 1-MCP. On the second day under drought (34 DAS), plants from both water conditions were exposed to 1-MCP in a hermetically sealed chamber for 15 hours. Control plants, dry or well-watered, that were not exposed to 1-MCP were kept in a separate chamber. At 36 (R2) and 47 (R3) DAS, shoot and root dry weights, leaf area index, number and dry weight of nodules, total ureides in sap, and N concentration...

Interações microbianas na disponibilidade e absorção de manganês por soja PAB
Nogueira,Marco Antonio; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira.

Some diazotrophic bacteria can fix nitrogen biologically in gramineous host plants. Generally, gramineous plants are also associated with mycorrhizal fungi, that can improve mainly plant P uptake. Among the factors affecting plant-microbe interactions, the plant genotype plays an important role. This study evaluates the effect of diazotrophic bacteria and an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), on five genotypes of maize (Zea mays L.), in relation to plant biomass, shoot N and P concentrations, and fine root morphological traits. The experimental design was entirely randomized in a factorial 5 × 4 × 2 arrangement, i.e., five maize genotypes (hybrids C333B, AS3466, and PREMIUM, and the inbreed lines lg40897-1 and lg40505-1), three diazotrophic bacteria...

Microbial diversity in an Oxisol under no-tillage and conventional tillage in southern Brazil Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Babujia,Letícia Carlos; Silva,Adriana Pereira; Nogueira,Marco Antonio; Hungria,Mariangela.
The no-tillage (NT) system of soil management is recognized as more sustainable than conventional tillage (CT), with an important role played by soil microorganisms. The objective of this study was to estimate differences in soil microbial diversity under NT and CT at different soil depths. For that, bacterial (16S rDNA) and fungal (18S rDNA) communities were evaluated by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) in a 20-year field experiment established on an Oxisol in southern Brazil on which soybean has been grown in the summer and wheat in the winter. Soil samples were collected at the depths of 0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm, and submitted to DGGE analyses. The results revealed lower similarity (28%) between bacterial communities in the NT and the...

Mycorrhizal effectiveness and manganese toxicity in soybean as affected by soil type and endophyte Scientia Agricola
Nogueira,Marco Antonio; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira.
Mycorrhizal plants may present Mn toxicity alleviation and this depends on the plant-endophyte-environment interaction. The effectiveness of three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Glomus macrocarpum, G. etunicatum, G. intraradices) and a control without AMF in two soils: Typic Rhodudalf with high Mn availability and a Typic Quartzipsamment, with low Mn availability, was evaluated in a time-course experiment at 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks after soybean (Glycine max L.) seedling emergence. The objective was to select the most effective AMF species to enhance plant growth and to assess its effects upon Mn uptake by plants and Mn availability in the soil. For the sandy soil, AMF inoculation resulted in increased plant biomass, especially with G. intraradices and...

Outstanding impact of soil tillage on the abundance of soil hydrolases revealed by a metagenomic approach BJM
Souza,Renata Carolini; Cantão,Maurício Egídio; Nogueira,Marco Antonio; Vasconcelos,Ana Tereza Ribeiro; Hungria,Mariangela.
ABSTRACT The soil represents the main source of novel biocatalysts and biomolecules of industrial relevance. We searched for hydrolases in silico in four shotgun metagenomes (4,079,223 sequences) obtained in a 13-year field trial carried out in southern Brazil, under the no-tillage (NT), or conventional tillage (CT) managements, with crop succession (CS, soybean/wheat), or crop rotation (CR, soybean/maize/wheat/lupine/oat). We identified 42,631 hydrolases belonging to five classes by comparing with the KEGG database, and 44,928 sequences by comparing with the NCBI-NR database. The abundance followed the order: lipases > laccases > cellulases > proteases > amylases > pectinases. Statistically significant differences were attributed to the...

Phosphorus availability changes the internal and external endomycorrhizal colonization and affects symbiotic effectivenes Scientia Agricola
Nogueira,Marco Antonio; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira.
Despite the awareness that high phosphorus (P) availability decreases the mycorrhizal root colonization in higher plants, the effects on the external mycelium are contradicting. The aim of this work was to assess the external mycelium of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) Glomus intraradices and Gigaspora rosea, associated to soybean under increasing P levels (0, 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg kg-1). The tested hypotheses were: a) the amount of external mycelium depends on the fungal species; b) the P levels affect diferentially each mycorrhizal species; c) the mycorrhizal effectiveness depends on the amount of external mycelium. Mycorrhizal stimulus on plant biomass occurred at P levels of 0, 25 and 200 mg kg-1. Mycorrhizal root colonization and total...

Cerezini,Paula; Kuwano,Biana Harumi; Neiverth,Walkyria; Grunvald,Anna Karolina; Pípolo,Antonio Eduardo; Hungria,Mariangela; Nogueira,Marco Antonio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate six soybean (Glycine max) genotypes for physiological traits and biological nitrogen fixation in drought conditions, and their capacity for recovery after rewetting, based on yield components. The genotypes evaluated in a greenhouse were the following: 'BRS 317', susceptible to drought; R01-581F and R02-1325, which show biological nitrogen fixation tolerant to drought; and the BRB14-207525, BRB14-207526, BRB14-207527 breed lines resulting from crossings between commercial genotypes and PI 471938, which shows a slow-wilting phenotype under drought. Drought conditions were applied to the genotypes at the full-flowering stage (R2) for ten days, whereas control plants were kept well-watered. Photosynthetic...

Plant growth and phosphorus uptake in mycorrhizal rangpur lime seedlings under different levels of phosphorus PAB
Nogueira,Marco Antonio; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the response of rangpur lime (Citrus limonia) to arbuscular mycorrhiza (Glomus intraradices), under P levels ranging from low to excessive. Plants were grown in three levels of soluble P (25, 200 and 1,000 mg kg-1), either inoculated with Glomus intraradices or left noninoculated, evaluated at 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days after transplanting (DAT). Total dry weight, shoot P concentration and specific P uptake by roots increased in mycorrhizal plants with the doses of 25 and 200 mg kg-1 P at 90 DAT. With 1,000 mg kg-1 P, mycorrhizal plants had a transient growth depression at 90 and 120 DAT, and nonmycorrhizal effects on P uptake at any harvesting period. Root colonization and total external mycelium correlated...

Santos,Cristiane Alcantara dos; Krawulski,Cristina Célia; Bini,Daniel; Goulart Filho,Tadeu; Knob,Adriana; Medina,Cristiane Conti; Andrade Filho,Galdino; Nogueira,Marco Antonio.
Pasture degradation is a concern, especially in susceptible sandy soils for which strategies to recover them must be developed. Microbiological and biochemical soil health indicators are useful in the guindace of soil management practices and sustainable soil use. We assessed the success of threePanicum maximum Jacq. cultivars in the reclamation of a pasture in a sandy Typic Acrudox in the northwest of the state of Paraná, Brazil, based on soil health indicators. On a formerly degraded pasture withUrochloa brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) R.D. Webster, a trial with threeP. maximum (cv. Massai, Tanzânia, or Mombaça) was conducted. Lime and phosphate were applied at set-up, and mineral N and K as topdressing. A remnant of degraded pasture adjacent to the...

Soil health: looking for suitable indicators. What should be considered to assess the effects of use and management on soil health? Scientia Agricola
Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira; Vasconcellos,Rafael Leandro Figueiredo; Bini,Daniel; Miyauchi,Marina Yumi Horta; Santos,Cristiane Alcantara dos; Alves,Paulo Roger Lopes; Paula,Alessandra Monteiro de; Nakatani,André Shigueyoshi; Pereira,Jamil de Moraes; Nogueira,Marco Antonio.
Soil Health refers to the ecological equilibrium and the functionality of a soil and its capacity to maintain a well balanced ecosystem with high biodiversity above and below surface, and productivity. To understand and use soil health as a tool for sustainability, physical, chemical, and biological properties must be employed to verify which respond to the soil use and management within a desired timescale. Attributes with a rapid response to natural or anthropogenic actions are considered good indicators of soil health. Among the physical indicators, soil texture, aggregation, moisture, porosity, and bulk density have been used, while among chemical indicators total C and N, mineral nutrients, organic matter, cation exchange capacity, among others are...

Water restriction and physiological traits in soybean genotypes contrasting for nitrogen fixation drought tolerance Scientia Agricola
Cerezini,Paula; Fagotti,Dáfila dos Santos Lima; Pípolo,Antonio Eduardo; Hungria,Mariangela; Nogueira,Marco Antonio.
ABSTRACT Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is essential to the economic viability of the soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] crop in Brazil, but drought may impair the BNF processes. We evaluated physiological traits of nitrogen fixation drought-tolerant (NFDT) (R01-581F, R01-416F and R02-1325) and drought-susceptible (CD 215 and BRS 317) genotypes of soybean subjected to drought or regular water supply between 45 and 55 days after emergence, in an experiment under greenhouse conditions in pots containing non-sterile soil. R01-581F had more stable photosynthetic and transpiration rates, and higher intercellular CO2 levels under drought. Drought reduced the chlorophyll concentration in all genotypes, but with less intensity in R01-581F and R02-1325. The...
